The Problem

Travelers often struggle to find a destination that truly matches their preferences for climate, cuisine, and activities. Without a personalized approach to destination selection, potential travelers might feel overwhelmed, delaying their travel plans or choosing a location that fails to meet their expectations. This indecision not only dampens the individual's travel experience but can also affect the business of travel agencies and related service providers.

The Solution

After identifying key questions and concerns from travelers at a local travel agency, I developed a concise, mobile-friendly quiz. This quiz, accessible directly on users' smartphones, helps them pinpoint ideal travel destinations while they plan or dream up their next trip. The popularity of interactive quizzes, combined with the quiz's accessibility and ease of use, encourages engagement, ensuring more travelers find their perfect match and boosting satisfaction and loyalty for travel businesses.

Travel Quiz Content Research

In developing an engaging and mobile-optimized travel quiz, I determined that an interactive format was the best approach to captivate and educate users about diverse travel destinations. The quiz was designed to feature 18 possible outcomes, representing different travel styles or destination types, with each outcome presenting 3 tailored travel suggestions, totaling 54 unique travel recommendations.

To begin, I utilized ChatGPT to brainstorm initial travel destination ideas for each potential quiz result. This helped in quickly generating a broad list of destinations that might fit various travel preferences and styles. After compiling the initial suggestions, I conducted thorough fact-checking using reliable travel resources and consulted with a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in travel and tourism to ensure the accuracy and relevance of each recommendation.

To manage the complex array of information efficiently, I organized all potential travel options into a detailed Excel table. This table categorizes each destination based on climate, activities, and food preferences, such as "Historic," "Outdoor Adventure," and types of cuisine like "Street Food" and "Fine Dining." Each row represents a unique combination, and the table structure allows for an easy overview and selection process, ensuring that each quiz outcome is both distinct and personalized with minimal repetition of destinations. This setup also facilitates quick updates and modifications to the travel options list.

This structured approach facilitated the creation of a user-friendly travel quiz that offers personalized suggestions based on user responses, enhancing the user's engagement and providing valuable insights into their travel preferences.

Prototyping and User Testing

Once I had the list of destinations organized and sourced images for all of the travel options, it was time to develop in Articulate Storyline. My main concern during development was double (and triple) checking that users would end up on the correct slide based on their choices. I relied heavily on my chart in Excel for testing and accuracy to ensure a seamless user experience.

The initial setup of the travel project allowed users to see detailed descriptions of each city’s highlights and unique vibe as soon as they started. This approach enabled a thorough comparison of options right from the beginning. To enhance the user experience, I introduced a celebratory element to the results slide. Now, when users select their preferred city, they are greeted with a custom caption and digital confetti, bringing an element of excitement and festivity to their selection. Additionally, users can restart the quiz at any time to explore more options, ensuring they can fully experience and evaluate each destination. This feature enhances the interactive experience and encourages exploration and engagement.

Full Development

One feature I particularly enjoyed developing is when users pick their ideal city at the end of the quiz, a burst of colorful, city-themed confetti flies across the screen to celebrate their choice! I wanted to make the experience even more enjoyable and rewarding. I love how this little animation not only brings a smile but also reinforces their accomplishment in finding the right destination for them. To achieve this animation, I used JavaScript and ChatGPT.

Usability for travel agencies

In designing my travel project, I aimed to ensure travelers felt confident and excited about their travel plans. To achieve this, I developed a concept where travel agencies can use QR codes as an interactive tool. These codes can be displayed in agency windows or on travel brochures. By scanning the QR code, travelers can access a customized quiz that helps them identify destinations that match their preferences, learn about exclusive deals, or receive personalized travel tips. This not only boosts engagement but also allows travelers to interact with agents more meaningfully, enhancing their planning process and overall travel experience. This feature is designed to keep customers informed and engaged, helping agencies build lasting relationships and repeat business.
